dear amy: i’m a mom of two adult children. their dad and i have been divorced since my son was 2. my ex never remarried, and i finally found my soul mate about a year after my divorce.my son is now 19. he has started a pattern of not talking to his parents for months at a time when he’s mad.this time it was over me telling him that he needed to do one chore and pay rent. i had to give him an ultimatum to either play by the rules or to move out within 30 days (which he had been planning to do, anyway).he decided to stop talking to me. he even turned away from me at a family event.this is the second time he has stopped talking to me and his father. the first time he did this i almost had a nervous breakdown. this time i can’t, because i’m in school getting a bachelor’s degree and i...

after wired offered us all a peek into apple’s new headquarters, one notable fact emerged: there’s no daycare center. whooooopsie. except this was no mistake. it was a big fat message to anyone who might be contemplating trying to balance family life with their obsessive devotion to their job. and that message reads, in the sleekest font imaginable, “nope.”the 150-acre campus contains a huge fitness and wellness center and every other amenity you can possibly imagine. basically everything you’d need to live your life at work. unless, of course, your life includes children.kids are many things, but mostly they are messy. that goes against apple’s whole vision of how the world should be — and it’s a vision that most of silicon valley shares. i’m not talking about being phy...

today on the family roadmap i will be talking about school age children and screen time. it seems to me that school age children are spending too much time in front of screens being entertained. television, computers, and phones are everywhere. a matter of fact my living room has one big television screen, two desk top computers, and my laptop. and downstairs my husband has his computers. and of course, we have phones. and i can’t forget - my kids also have tablets. too much screen time is tempting...read more at http://wp.me/p8obxs-ag...

today my heart breaks for all the families who lost children and adults in the manchester attack.everyone connected to the mariposa trust knows about loss, and we would love to stop anyone else from knowing the pain of grief. i send all my love to anyone touched by this horrific act of evil.so many of us are now left with questions... a big one for me is what we can say to our children who fear to live on a planet where terrorism is now a daily occurrence and how do we raise them to not live in fear?i simply don't think there is a correct answer, we just have to keep talking, answer any questions our children may have and wrap them in love. as an avid news watcher i am sad to say i have become almost accustomed to hearing of atrocities around the world, and perhaps this has made me a tad r...

remember when kids had a lunch hour? i do. back in the 1980s, my children had enough time to walk home for lunch and go back to school to run around on the playground. now their kids have 20 minutes for lunch, which includes the time it takes to march them into the lunchroom, get their food, and exit for the next grade. so actually, more like 10 minutes to gobble down that lunch.for children who are slow eaters, this is a nightmare scenario. many of the children who bring their own lunches end up eating most of the food after school lets out. others who eat school lunch end up throwing out a lot of food they don’t have enough time to eat.children are rushed through lunch by lunch supervisors who often yell at them to stop talking, clean up their space, and hurry to go out for recess. if ...

children are not being talked about in the general election debate, because they don't vote. we cannot continue to allow children to be cast aside and considered a silent group. they are the future of our country and should be engaged with so that they feel their worth in our society, and use that feeling of worth to make positive differences to our communities.children living with their birth or adoptive families will have their parents to think about their interests when they are casting their vote. those families will think about how the policies set out by candidates will impact on them, on their children, and on their future. but what about those children who don't live with their families? those children who live in the care system under the care of the state? of course, those caring...

it's something feminists have been talking about for decades, but according to a new report by our watch, the vast majority of parents want it too: raising children free of gender stereotypes. parents don't want their boys shamed for showing vulnerability, or being gentle and loving. they don't want their girls growing up thinking it's unwomanly to be fierce and ambitious. they want their children to be free to achieve and feel everything they can, because if you ask any parent what they want for their kids, most of them will tell you they just want them to be happy. children learn about gender roles before they are two years old.  photo: stocksybut, like the song says, you can't always get what you want.most of the parents surveyed for the our watch report were at least 25 years old, an...

parents, caregivers and teachers often focus on teaching children to speak, to read and even to play. we also need to focus on helping to build children’s capacity for compassion, empathy and constructive experiences with others. these are called social-emotional skills, and they are vital to children’s success in school and life. thankfully, every adult in children’s lives can help them build these skills – right from the start. children’s earliest experiences meaningfully shape who they are. from the moment they’re born, parents and caregivers can help children build a strong social-emotional foundation through their nurturing and loving relationships, including through their everyday routines and moments when they talk, read and sing together. all learning is interconnected...
